Brian Thompson, the Chief Executive Officer of UnitedHealthcare, was tragically shot and killed on the morning of December 4, outside the Hilton hotel located in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. According to Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the 50-year-old executive was en route to an investor conference for UnitedHealthcare when an unidentified assailant approached him from behind and discharged multiple rounds, hitting him in the back and calf.
Thompson was declared dead shortly after arriving at Mount Sinai West Hospital. NBC reported that law enforcement characterized the incident as a “premeditated, preplanned targeted attack.”
Surveillance footage released by NBC depicted the assailant waiting for several minutes before opening fire on Thompson, who was dressed in a blue suit. The shooter continued to fire as Thompson fell to the ground. Authorities noted that the firearm appeared to jam but was cleared before the assailant resumed shooting.
Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny stated that officers recovered three live 9 mm rounds, three spent shell casings, and a cell phone in the vicinity of the incident. Investigators suspect that the gunman utilized a weapon fitted with a silencer.
The suspect fled the scene on foot, later switching to a rental bicycle, and was last observed entering Central Park. Law enforcement described the individual as wearing a black hoodie and pants, and carrying a gray backpack. While police believe Thompson was intentionally targeted, the motive for the attack remains unknown. Compounding the mystery, Thompson’s wife, Paulette, mentioned that her husband had received threats prior to the incident.
The individual expressed uncertainty, stating, “Essentially, I am unsure, perhaps it is a matter of insufficient coverage? I lack specific details. All I am aware of is that he mentioned there were individuals who had been making threats against him.”
The family remains in deep sorrow over his passing, characterizing him as an “extraordinarily loving, generous, and talented individual,” and has requested privacy as they navigate this challenging period.
In response to the tragedy, UnitedHealth Group issued a statement conveying their shock and sorrow regarding Thompson’s demise, referring to him as a valued colleague and friend.
The organization committed to fully cooperating with the NYPD’s investigation and extended sincere condolences to Thompson’s family and loved ones.
