Chaos ensued when Thomas and Sienna shared a photo on social media to celebrate their tenth wedding anniversary. An unsettling face emerged in the image, setting off a series of events that forced the joyful couple to confront a disturbing reality.
Thomas promptly set the camera timer and positioned himself beside Sienna in front of the fireplace, remarking, “Ten years.”
Sienna replied, “Ten years of us.” As the timer ticked down, she thought she heard a faint noise from the hallway behind her. Her attention momentarily shifted, but she quickly dismissed it, redirecting her focus to their anniversary photo, yet another snapshot of their shared journey.
Their home was filled with various items that decorated the walls and cluttered the spaces.
Suddenly nostalgic, Thomas sighed. “I remember when we first moved in here… We spent two nights sleeping on the floor,” he reminisced, the corners of his eyes crinkling with the memory.
Sienna added, “And now, every corner holds a fragment of our story. We also get to share these moments with others… on social media.” She chuckled, tapping on her phone before setting it aside to savor the remainder of the evening.
The following morning, sunlight roused her from sleep, but as Sienna blinked against the brightness, she sensed that something else was amiss.
“Check that, hon,” Thomas murmured, his voice heavy with slumber. “It’s been pinging for a while now.”
Sienna reached for her nightstand, her eyes still heavy, and brought her phone closer. An overwhelming number of social media notifications greeted her. She scrolled through them, adjusting her position on the bed for comfort.
“People are saying there’s something strange in our photo,” she said, her brow furrowing. “I have several missed calls, too.”
Thomas shifted closer to examine her phone. “Strange? What do you mean?”
Sienna furrowed her brow as she perused the comments. “They claim there’s a strange face in the background. But that can’t be true, can it?”
He exhaled deeply, taking the phone to examine the image closely. “It’s likely just shadows or something similar. Don’t let it trouble you.” He shook his head and returned the phone to her before rising from the bed to start his day. However, Sienna remained engrossed in the comments.
One particular comment included a screenshot that highlighted an unsettling, childlike face near her shoulder in the photograph. “Thomas… What on earth is that?” she murmured in fear, her finger hovering over the screen.
Thomas, who had been brushing his teeth, returned to take a look. “It must be a prank.”
Yet Sienna was filled with dread, recalling the noise she had heard when the camera captured the image. She began searching her phone until she located the original photo in the gallery. “This isn’t a glitch. It’s too distinct, too lifelike. Look at its expression,” she insisted, her eyes wide with alarm.
Thomas remained skeptical, but Sienna was determined to investigate further. She scrolled through the images. “See? In every picture, there’s this odd, hazy figure,” she noted. “I think… it might be a ghost. Perhaps our house is haunted.”
“We’ve lived here for ten years. We would have noticed something like that,” he retorted, though his tone lacked conviction. Sienna could sense his confusion, if not outright concern.
As they pondered the unsettling revelation, Sienna moved to the spot where the camera had been positioned and began taking more photos, hoping to find a rational explanation. However, her experiment was abruptly interrupted when she screamed in terror as hands gripped her shoulders. “Calm down, love. It’s just me,” her husband said, chuckling softly. “Forget about that photo. We have lunch reservations, remember?”
Sienna nodded and prepared to leave, though she cast wary glances around the house before stepping out. She continued to scan her surroundings intently as Thomas opened the car door for her and then made his way to the driver’s seat.
A sudden movement drew her attention to the window. The same unsettling face had reappeared, causing her to gasp. “Stop the car!” she urged, gesturing towards the house. Thomas squinted but failed to discern anything. It had vanished, yet Sienna remained convinced of what she had witnessed.
That evening, Sienna was stirred from her sleep by a sorrowful wail and the sound of footsteps within their home. “Darling, wake up. Do you hear that?” she murmured, detecting sobs emanating from the hallway.
Thomas awoke and also heard the noise. He quickly reached for the phone.
“We can’t call 911 for a ghost!” Sienna protested, but he was determined to safeguard them against a tangible threat. After completing the call, he retrieved his firearm and proceeded to investigate.
Sienna was adamant about accompanying him, declaring, “I’m going with you!”
They cautiously advanced towards the origin of the strange sounds in their house. Thomas inspected the guest bedroom, but the footsteps continued to resonate from downstairs. They moved carefully, hearing additional noises—another language—coming from the kitchen.
Sienna flinched and gasped once more as she finally discerned the truth about their intruder. This was not a ghost. Instead, they encountered the disturbing sight of a malnourished boy—the very same one from their photograph. He was weeping, his pale, gaunt face drenched in tears and mucus.
“Freeze!” Thomas commanded, but the boy sobbed and shook his head. Her husband shifted his focus to the child and lowered his weapon, realizing there was no threat. “Hey there, it’s alright. We won’t harm you.”
“Help?” The child’s eyes sparkled with hope.
Despite her racing heart, Sienna’s fear transformed into compassion at his desperate plea. “You’re hungry, aren’t you?” she inquired, offering a gentle smile.
“Hungry, yes.” The boy nodded in affirmation.
“What is your name?”
“Nikolai.”
As Sienna began to prepare a sandwich for Nikolai, the couple understood that the boy had not intended to intrude. He was in dire need of assistance. “Where did you come from?” she asked softly.
